Fraternity: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

I am honored to be a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first African American greek organization founded on December 4, 1906 at Cornell University, Ithica, New York by Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelly, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy.

While completing an undergraduate degree at Valdosta State University, I was initiated into the Mu Omicron Chapter of the fraternity on March 31, 1992. I am currently a member of the Kappa Tau Lambda, Alumni Chapter, of Valdosta, Georgia where I serve as Reclamation Chair.

Mu Omicron Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha

In April 2006, The Mu Omicron Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. celebrated its 30th anniversary. The Fraternity was founded on December 4, 1906 at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. The local chapter was established at Valdosta State College on May 31, 1976.

While a number of fraternity chapters across the country are dealing with negative press due to hazing, the Mu Omicron chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha continues to set high standards in scholarship and service on campus and throughout the Valdosta community.

Former Chapter President, Samuel S. Taylor, “The current brothers of Mu Omicron are involved in every aspect of campus life such as: Resident Assistants, SGA Senators, VSU Mass Choir Members, All American Football & National Champion Winners, SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise), Alpha Phi Omega Community Service Organization, and various honor societies.”

In 2005 the chapter won the National Excellence in Service Award at their National Convention. “The VSU faculty also views us as leaders around campus and responsible young men.  We uphold this by never being in trouble with Nationals or Valdosta State University from 1976 to 2006,” Taylor adds.

Local Trivia
